Northern League |
![]() |
The Northern League was founded in 1890, making it the second oldest football league in the world.
Until the abolition of Amateur status in 1974, the Northern League was the primary amateur league in the North of England, and arguably the whole country. Led by Bishop Auckland and Crook Town, Northern League clubs were regular winners of the F.A. Amateur Cup.
In recent years, the Northern League has lost a little of its previous status, and is now a two-division league at Step 5 and 6 of the National League System, feeding the Northern Premier League.
