Formerly the East Devon Football Association and the Exeter & District League, the league has been known as the Devon & Exeter League since 1972-73.

The league has a catchment area of the whole of Devon plus anywhere within 50 miles of Exeter, but the main body of clubs has always been clustered around East Devon.
