By the time of the second competition, the Vase was here to stay, and
a preliminary round was needed to scythe the number of clubs down to 128
for the first round. Holders Hoddesdon Town didn't grace the competition
for long, losing in the first round at Clacton Town, while former finalists
Epsom & Ewell were also gone by the end of second round, coming off
second best in a 5-4 thriller at home to Merstham. By the
time of the Wembley final, Billericay Town emerged to play Stamford, with
the Essex side triumphing by a single goal in front of 12000 spectators. This
was to be the start of the Billericay Vase dynasty.
